Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia. Hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus commonly have comorbidities requiring the concomitant use of multiple medications, which increases the risk of drug interactions that may affect therapeutic effectiveness and increase adverse effects. Objective: This study aimed to determine the potential drug interactions of antidiabetic medications among hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Hospital X Bandar Lampung in 2025. Methods: This study used a non-experimental method with a retrospective descriptive design. Data were obtained from medical records for the period of January–August 2025. The study population consisted of 612 patients, with a sample of 242 patients selected using systematic random sampling. Potential drug interactions were identified using Medscape and Drugs.com. Results and Discussion: The results show that 169 patients (69.8%) have potential drug interactions, while 73 patients (30.2%) have no potential interactions. A total of 428 potential drug interaction events are identified, consisting of 351 pharmacodynamic interactions (82%) and 77 pharmacokinetic interactions (18%). Based on severity, moderate interactions account for 334 events (78%), while minor interactions account for 94 events (22%). The most frequently identified interaction is between aspirin and insulin glargine, with 20 events (4.7%). Conclusion: This study shows that the potential for drug interactions among hospitalized patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus remains considerable, indicating the need for medication therapy monitoring to improve the safety and effectiveness of treatment.
