Butterfly Pea Flowers (Clitoria Ternatea L.), Dysmenorrhea Pain, Adolescent Girls

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a common menstrual pain complaint experienced by adolescent girls and may interfere with their educational and social activities. This condition can negatively affect adolescents’ quality of life, disrupt daily activities, and contribute to absenteeism from school or work. This study aimed to determine the effect of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) administration on dysmenorrhea pain among adolescents at MAN 2 Deli Serdang. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest design. The study population consisted of all female students at MAN 2 Deli Serdang who experienced primary dysmenorrhea, with a total of 43 participants. A total of 38 respondents were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Statistical analysis was performed using the paired sample t-test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that butterfly pea flower infusion contained bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the administration of butterfly pea flower significantly reduced dysmenorrhea pain among adolescents at MAN 2 Deli Serdang, with a p-value of 0.000. Furthermore, the reduction in pain intensity was indicated by a decrease in the mean pain score from 6.24 in the pretest to 3.55 in the posttest. These findings indicate that butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) has an effect on reducing dysmenorrhea pain among adolescent girls. Therefore, butterfly pea flower may be considered as a potential complementary herbal intervention for managing dysmenorrhea symptoms in adolescents.
