Effectiveness of Educational Videos on Health Literacy and Contact Dermatitis Prevention among Seaweed Farmers in Tarakan

Contact dermatitis is an occupational skin disease that may affect seaweed farmers because of repeated exposure to seawater, humidity, marine organisms, and irritants. Limited health literacy and inadequate preventive behavior may increase workers’ vulnerability to skin disorders. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of an educational video in improving health literacy and contact dermatitis prevention behavior among seaweed farmers in RT 05 Pantai Amal, Tarakan City. This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. Forty-three respondents were selected through purposive sampling. The intervention consisted of a 1–2-minute educational video covering causes, symptoms, impacts, personal protective equipment, personal hygiene, and skin care. Data were collected using a 15-item health literacy questionnaire and a 15-item prevention behavior questionnaire, followed by univariate analysis, the Shapiro–Wilk test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Before the intervention, 60.5% of respondents had moderate health literacy and 34.9% had good health literacy; after the intervention, the proportion in the good category increased to 83.7%. Good prevention behavior increased from 39.5% to 88.4%. The thesis manuscript reported p<0.001 for both outcomes. Educational video may serve as an effective health-promotion medium to improve health literacy and contact dermatitis prevention behavior among seaweed farmers. Sustainable implementation through primary health-care services and coastal communities should be accompanied by long-term behavioral evaluation.
