Abstract

Background: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) remains a primary contributor to global illness and mortality rates. Compromised tissue perfusion in individuals with CHD often disrupts systemic acid-base homeostasis, a physiological state evaluated via Arterial Blood Gas Analysis (ABG). Two key parameters—bicarbonate concentration (HCO₃) and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO₂)—serve as primary indicators in assessing this balance. This investigation seeks to evaluate the correlation between HCO₃ levels and PCO₂ pressure among CHD patients based on ABG findings at Grandmed Hospital Lubuk Pakam. Methods: An analytical observational design utilizing a cross-sectional framework was implemented. Out of a population of 33 CHD patients, 30 eligible subjects were recruited via purposive sampling. Secondary clinical data extracted from patient medical records were statistically examined using the Pearson correlation test.. Results: Descriptive findings revealed a mean HCO₃ concentration of 24.42 mEq/L alongside a mean PCO₂ pressure of 32.42 mmHg. Normality testing verified a normal data distribution across variables (p > 0.05). Subsequent Pearson correlation testing demonstrated a highly robust, positive, and statistically significant association between HCO₃ concentrations and PCO₂ values, evidenced by p = 0.000 (p < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.945. Conclusion: A significant and strong positive correlation exists between bicarbonate (HCO₃) levels and carbon dioxide pressure (PCO₂) based on ABG evaluations among Coronary Heart
